Storm Doors: The Good Versus the Junk – What Makes a Good, Long-Lasting Storm Door?

(1)     THE THICKNESS OF THE DOOR SHOULD BE 1 1/4 INCH OR GREATER FOR MAXIMUM RIDGITY.

(2)     THE FRAME SHOULD BE HEAVY DUTY EXTRUDED ALUMINUM WITH WOOD CORE, FOAM FILLED, OR INTERNAL I-BEAM CONSTRUCTION FOR ADDED STRENGTH AGAINST TWISTING OR COMPRESSIVE FORCES.

(3)     THE CORNERS SHOULD BE INTERNALLY REINFORCED WITH CORROSION PROOF GUSSETS.

(4)     KICK PANEL SHOULD BE THICK REINFORCED ALUMINUM.

(5)     THE STRENGTH OF THE DOOR CLOSER IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO HOW IT’S ATTACHED TO THE DOOR. A GOOD CLOSER IS OF LITTLE DEFENSE AGAINST A STRONG WIND IF IT’S ATTACHED TO THE DOOR BY HALF INCH SCREWS.

(6)     FULL VIEW STORM DOORS SHOULD HAVE 2 CLOSERS BECAUSE OF THE WIEGHT OF THE GLASS. SELF STORING DOORS SHOULD HAVE 1 CLOSER WITH A CHAIN AND SPRING MECHANISM AT THE TOP.

(7)     FULL VIEW GLASS SHOULD BE TEMPERED OR KEEPSAFE. (LAMINATED)

(8)     SOME BRANDS ARE USING A NEW EASY LIFT RATCHET SYSTEM ON THE SELF STORING DOORS. THIS SYSTEM ALLOWS YOU TO EASILY MOVE THE PANELS UP AND DOWN. UNFORTUNATELY, YOU CAN ALSO DO THIS FROM THE OUTSIDE. ALTHOUGH A STORM DOOR IS NOT A SECURITY DOOR AS SUCH, IT SHOULD NOT BE THAT EASY TO GAIN ENTRY.

(9)     IF YOU LIKE BRASS HARDWARE, AVOID BRASS PLATED. THIS FLAKES OFF AFTER A FEW YEARS AND LOOKS UGLY. BRASS SHOULD BE SOLID ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

(10)  A DECENT STORM DOOR WILL HAVE HIGH GRADE WEATHERSTRIPPING ON ALL THREE SIDES AND A STRONG BOTTOM SWEEP.

(11)  EMBOSSING ON THE DOOR, USUALLY IN THE SHAPE OF CROSSBUCKS OR RECTANGLES SHOULD BE METAL AND NOT PLASTIC. PLASTIC WARPS OVER TIME IF IT FACES THE SUN.

(12)  BEWARE OF FULLVIEW STORM DOORS THAT USE A VINYL GLAZING BEAD TO HOLD THE PANELS IN. WHEN YOU SWITCH PANELS, YOU HAVE TO PULL THE BEAD OUT. IT’S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET IT BACK IN. THE BEST SYSTEM USES POLYCARBONATE (A SUPER STRONG PLASTIC) CLIPS TO SECURE THE PANELS.

(13)  STAY AWAY FROM VINYL CLAD STORM DOORS. THEY ARE JUNK.
